Two excellent comedy drag shows at Search

My friends visiting from Peru stayed on in BsAs a couple of extra days so we have been out the last two nights. On Friday we went first to see the show "Marionetas del Pene" where two men are totally naked on stage and play with, twist and contort their tackle and generally act the fool for over an hour. Comments I heard varied from "hilarious" and "brilliant" to "boring" and "disgusting". Shows how taste can vary!

After the show we went first to the inauguration party of the new bar Flux (Marcelo T de Alvear 980) just opened by Brit Jamie Taylor. There was a good crowd in there enjoying the free cocktails. Jamie told me that at this stage he doesn't intend to put on comedy drag or strip shows so I'm not sure how he is going to attract his customers; we shall just have to wait and see.

Following that we went to the gay show bar Search (Azcuenaga 1007) and arrived just in time for the show by Julio Cesar Lynch and Lissy Tagliani which was excellent. The bar was packed and included over a dozen young and very well-dressed transvestites.

The next night (Saturday) after the cine we managed to squeeze in to Search again for the very funny drag show by Walter Soares and Enrique Somebodyorother. Following that we went round to the next street to the bar W.C. (Uriburu 1018) which seems to more popular every time I go (and so are the toilets).

On both nights on the way back home by taxi around 4 am we passed the bar Sitges (Av. Cordoba 4119) and there was a long queue waiting to enter, even in the pouring rain last night. I must go back there again soon and see what the attraction is.

During the week the BsAs city government brought in a new law which prohibits soliciting for prostitution within 200m of inhabited buildings which just about eliminates every street and avenue in the city. I read in the newspaper that most of the working girls (including transvestites) have moved out to Rosedal in Bosques de Palermo.

Another weekend without discos

Some people I know are suffering definite withdrawal symptoms. From a report on the website SentidoG http://www.sentidog.com/ dated 20th January, none of the 108 officially listed discos in the city comply with the security requirements and so another weekend passes without any possibility of hitting the dance floor. However the popular bar Sitges has re-opened and I noted a long queue waiting to enter as I passed in a taxi at 3 a.m. this morning.

Last night (Saturday) I was in a group of 7 friends who went to see the comedy play "5Gays.com - Despedida de Soltero". The theme is a stag party involving 5 friends - all gay - one of whom is getting married next day - to a woman! All appears to be going well but there are some surprises in store. The play continues to be very successful in Spain and is enjoying a long run here in BA. Well worth a visit even if, like me, your knowledge of Spanish is somewhat less than perfect.

Afterwards we went to the bar Titanic Club (Av. Callao 1156) for the show which started at 1:30 am. There were two drag comedians headed by the always funny Luis Guadalupe and four impressive strippers. This bar is long and narrow and the stage is at one end and even though the strippers step out along the bar it is difficult to fully appreciate the show from the far end. The moral being if you want to get a good view get there early and stake your place near the stage.

Another closure

I just read on the web site that the very popular bar Sitges (Avenida Córdoba 4119) has also been closed by the Municipality (in addition to all the discos). It is getting really difficult to know where to go for a night out. As soon as places start to re-open I will post it on here.

Female nudity

My friend is visiting BA from Peru and he has seen more naked females on stage in one week in Buenos Aires than in a lifetime as a theatrical performer in Peru. Viz: Tuesday night - Teatro Maipo, modern dance and ballet show called Lentejuelas; female dancers semi-naked. Friday night - Teatro Maipo again for a performance of the play La Señorita de Tacna; female actress fully naked in one scene. Saturday night - show at Parada Obligada; female dancer fully naked.

Last night at Parada Obligada

Last night we went to see the show at the bar Parada Obligada (Charcas 4338). The entrance charge was 10 pesos which included one drink. There were two comedy drags, two male dancers, two female dancers, and a male stripper. The two drags were humorous (especially Julio Cesar Lynch), the tango dance routines were brilliant, the other dance routines less-so, and the very handsome stripper finished with an impressive erection. The show lasted one hour and twenty minutes.

The night was less than enjoyable for two reasons. Firstly, the show started at 2:40 a.m., one hour and ten minutes later than publicised (late, even by BA standards). Secondly, the place was appallingly overcrowded, with late arrivals just pushing to the front and standing in front of people who had arrived earlier. (The problem just now is that with all the discos closed people have nowhere to go, and this bar was taking the entrance money from everybody that came through the door, regardless of how many were already in there.)

Out on the scene

Last Saturday 8/01/05 myself and friend went first to the gay show bar Search, (Azcuenaga 1007). The first show at 1 a.m. with stripper and drag was nothing special. The second show at 2 a.m. which played to a packed bar was excellent; two drags did comedy mime for nearly an hour and the humour was very enjoyable (even with my poor knowledge of Spanish). Unfortunately we didn't get the names of the two performers; shame the bar doesn't have a web site with a published programme.

After the show at around 3 a.m. we looked in at the new bar W.C. (Uriburu 1018) which is in the next street to Search. There was a good-looking crowd in there and the toilets (with as much space as the bar itself) were busy. This bar could become very popular.

First Posting

This bLOG is an addition to my MSN group Gays Away in Buenos Aires which is a bulletin board and social meeting group for gay expatriates (and their friends) either living or visiting Buenos Aires.

I decided to start this bLOG because the Buenos Aires gay web sites are generally disappointing. Most are out-dated and few have current information or promote forthcoming events. The best web site by far is Buenos Aires Gay Travel Guide http://www.thegayguide.com.ar/

None of the web sites (in English or Spanish) at todays date mention that since the tragic fire on 30th December that killed over 180 and injured over 700 all discos are closed. The city government is reviewing all licences of public enclosed spaces and some cines, restaurants, shopping malls, have already been closed (albeit temporarily). When the discos do re-open there will undoubtedly be some changes, and some may never re-open.
