Gays Away in BA meeting Thursday 2nd June

Gays Away in Buenos Aires will be holding the next meeting on Thursday 2nd June 2005 from 10 pm in The Titanic Club.
Directions as follows -
The Titanic Club, Av. Callao 1156 (subsuelo), Recoleta.
Tel: 4816-1333. Website: http://www.the-titanic-club.com.ar/
Nearest Subte is Linea D - Callao. From there walk three blocks along Av. Callao, cross Av. Santa Fe, and continue half a block more.

On arrival ask for Ian (that's me - the organiser). If it helps, I vaguely resemble a bald, overweight version of the actor Anthony Hopkins (you can see my pic on the bLOG).

Angels Disco

I have found among some Argentine guys a certain antipathy to darker skinned guys or guys from other South American countries such as Paraguay, Bolivia or Peru. So when I have commented that I intended to go to Angels the reaction has sometimes been a frown or a slight downturn of the mouth and a question "what do you want to go there for?" The reaction is generated because Angels is popular with guys from those countries mentioned earlier who who would not feel comfortable in Glam or Palacio which are very "white" discos. (Incidentally, the antipathy is reciprocated.)

I had been to Angels once last year but it was a midweek night and it was too early so I didn't get the full impression. I finally made a repeat visit last Friday night in the company of a visitor from USA. We arrived at 12:30 a.m. and had only a short wait in the queue. After entering you go up one floor to pay your entry which is $18 (pesos) which includes four drinks (beer or soda). You then enter into the main bar which has tables and chairs. From there you can access two dance floors; up one floor from the bar has regular disco music while down one floor from the bar has latin music. By the time we left at 2:30 a.m. the upper dance floor was half empty with people standing around and hardly any dancing. On the other hand the lower dance floor was packed with nearly every one dancing and having a great time.

Mar del Plata

Last weekend just by way of a change my bf and I went to Mar del Plata. For those unfamiliar with Argentina it is a city about 400 km south of BsAs on the Atlantic coast and is the principal resort for summer vacationers from BsAs. This time of year is out of season of course which is really the best time to go if you want to avoid the crowds.

There is hardly any gay scene there at this time of year and the only place we found open is called Deep (Buenos Aires 2755). Unfortunately I can't tell you what it is like inside as we were refused entry because my bf wasn't carrying any foto ID.

However I can tell you one restaurant to visit and one to avoid. The one to visit is called Los GarcĂa (Olavarria 2657). It is similar to a Brazilian churrascaria where meat is cooked on a sword over a charcoal fire and then brought to your table. There were about 10 different meats plus side dishes at a fixed price of just 19 pesos (about US$6). The restaurant itself is very nice and the waiters are eye candy!

The restaurant to avoid is called Puerto Palos. It is one of the fish restaurants grouped together near the fishing port. The restaurant itself is nice but the food was dreadful. I ordered plaice and my bf ordered salmon and both were dry and tasteless. I complained of course but in this part of the world the customer is never right.

A Full Sauna

I have commented on this before but I make no apology for doing the same again. A Full Sauna (Viamonte 1770) may be the best sauna in the city by far but if I pay $25 for entry I expect better than surly and disrespectful staff, thin and threadbare towels the size of pocket handkerchiefs, and adequate heating in all areas. The lack of proper management is obvious. Enough complaints might get the message through (if you can find someone in authority).
