Gays Away in BA meeting Thursday 4th August

Gays Away in Buenos Aires will be holding the next meeting on Thursday 4th August 2005 from 10 pm in Flux Bar.
Directions as follows -
Flux Bar, Marcelo T de Alvear 980, (subsuelo), Centro.
Website: http://www.fluxbar.com.ar/
Nearest Subte is Linea C - General San Martin. From there walk three blocks along Marcelo T de Alvear and the bar is on the left hand side just before Carlos Pellegrini.
On arrival ask for Ian (that's me - the organiser). If it helps, I vaguely resemble a bald, overweight version of the actor Anthony Hopkins (you can see my pic on the bLOG).

Flux Bar has finally re-opened after 6 months hard work obtaining a new licence. Please come and support Jamie (England) and Ilia (Russia) in their new enterprise. If you arrive before 10 pm you can take advantage of Happy Hour 2x1 prices.

Tren a las Nubes, Salta, Argentina service suspended.

This posting is off topic for this bLOG but of interest to anyone thinking of heading to Salta in the north-west of Argentina and wanting to ride the Tren a las Nubes (Train to the Clouds). Service has been suspended indefinitely following an incident on 16th July when the motor broke down and 460 passengers were stranded at over 4000 metres altitude 20 km from the nearest village at 10 degrees below zero in a train with no heating. The frozen passengers were rescued after several hours.

For Buenos Aires tourists

For anyone interested visiting Buenos Aires as a tourist I recently found two very good references. The first is a nicely written article by a un-named lady from Arizona that appears in the web site InfoBAE. See http://www.infobae.com/notas/nota.php?Idx=199073&IdxSeccion=100421

The other is an excellent photo essay by Judith Barath that appears in the web site Worldisround. See http://www.worldisround.com/articles/93736/index.html
I don't receive any commission from the Buenos Aires tourist board!

Back on the gay scene in BsAs

Last night I arranged to see some friends in Sitges (Cordoba 4119) but at no particular time. I had forgotten how late the night starts here in Buenos Aires; when I arrived at 11:45 pm there were only about 20 people in there and a lot of empty seats. About midnight people started to arrive (including my friends), then the trickle became a flood and at 1:00 am when I left the place was packed and there was a queue to enter.

From there I took a taxi to the junction of Av. Santa Fe and Av. Puerreydon to pick up some flyers and see if there was anything interesting happening. Unfortunately by this time the weather really wasn't fit for a dog, there was a steady rain and the temperature was about 6 degC. I couldn't help but feel sorry for the guys handing out flyers and the few hardy (or desperate) taxi boys lurking in doorways looking for customers.

I headed down to Contramano (Rodriguez Peña 1082) to see what changes had been made since it re-opened as a cafe-bar. I never liked Contramano when it was disco because it became extremely crowded and the concentration of cigarette smoke made it intolerable for me. Now the floor space has been reduced to about one third of former days and the smoke problem is reduced. There were about 100 guys in there nearly all aged over 35 and nearly all on their own, standing around sipping their drinks and eyeing up the other guys. Depending on your point of view the place is either exhilarating or deadly dull. I had one beer and left.

Buenos Aires Gay Pride 2005

I am now back in BsAs after my trip back to UK and other parts and the first thing to report is that Gay Pride has been announced for Saturday 5th November starting at 6:00 pm in Plaza de Mayo. The official website (in Spanish) is http://www.marchadelorgullo.org.ar/ The first page of the web site is asking for submission of designs for the official poster competition, proposals for activities to take place in the week leading up to 5th November, for volunteers to assist during the week, and of course for donations. The theme of this years Gay Pride is "QUEREMOS LOS MISMOS DERECHOS " (We Want the Same Rights).
