Travel tips for Buenos Aires
Travel by air and sea
Air (International)
The international airport for Buenos Aires is known as Ezeiza (EZE). It is located about 40
minutes by road from the city centre. There is no rail or underground link (yet).
On arrival at immigration control tourists normally receive a passport stamp which is a 90-day
visa. This visa can be renewed before expiry by exiting and re-entering the country (even same
day); the easiest way to do this is by a day trip via Buquebus across the River Plate to Colonia
or Montevideo, Uruguay. Alternatively the visa can be renewed at the Migraciones office on payment
of $100 (that is Pesos). There is a fine if you try to exit the country with an expired
visa.
The customs check for tourists is normally conducted by passing all your bags and hand-carries
through a scanner.
After exiting customs passengers are confronted with an array of kiosks offering transfers and
other tourist services. For travel into the city you are strongly recommended to take either the
service of a private hire taxi known locally as a remis, or the airport bus shuttle
service. Both these are operated by the company Manuel Tienda Leon; they have a web-site where you can pre-book your journey on-line. There
are regular taxis available but these are less secure and not recommended.
Air (Domestic)
The domestic airport for Buenos Aires is known as Aeroparque (AEP). It is located about 15 minutes
by road from the city centre. There is no rail or underground link. Flights operate to the rest of
Argentina and to Uruguay.
Boat
The principal service across the River Plate to Uruguay is operated by Buquebus. There is a daily
service to Colonia on either the fast boat (1 hour) or the slow boat (3 hours) with an onward bus
connection to Montevideo. There is a daily service to Montevideo (3 hours) with an onward bus
connection to Punta del Este. Go to the Buquebus web-site from here.
